Pensions: fewer forms, more money
Older people should receive £160 as a basic state pension. We want to see the earnings link restored and abolish council tax completely for all those with an annual income of less than £10,000.
Pensioners should be able to live rent free if they are council tenants and all should get their heating costs paid for so that no more die of hypothermia.
These things should be of right, without having to fill out complicated forms.

"Older people should not have to scrimp and scrape after a lifetime of hard work. It is a scandal that pensioner poverty is allowed to exist in the 21st Century." |
A cleaner, greener Scotland
For decades Fife has been dumped on, from landfill dumps to opencast sites. Morag has been active in the campaign against the planned landfill at Westfield.
Raising recycling levels, waste prevention and renewable energy are the only means to a sustainable future as nuclear power offers only long-term pollution. Scotland's natural wave and wind power can be harnessed cleanly.
End the occupation of Iraq
Iraqis need self-determination not occupation. They also need our support. The wealthy nations of the world should offer humanitarian aid instead of handing billion-dollar contracts to their big-business pals. They must not be allowed to make a killing twice!
We need to stop sending young people to their deaths in illegal wars, and end the economic conscription that puts them in the firing line. No family should have to sacrifice their sons and daughters to line the pockets of the rich.

"100,000 innocent people were slaughtered as a result of Tony Blair's and George W. Bush's lies - equivalent to wiping out the entire Glenrothes Constituency." |
Socialist answers to crime
Our communities are blighted by drug crime. Windows can be repaired, stolen property can be replaced, but rebuilding victims' lives takes much longer.
Offering prescription heroin to addicts is successful in numerous countries. It reduces crime, gets addicts back into employment, and could put dealers out of business.
Forget tagging and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders, young people need routes away from damaging behaviour towards meaningful and productive lifestyles. The poverty - crime link must be broken so police can target career criminals. Being positive instead of punitive makes real change possible.
A vote for the SSP says that you believe in your community.
More jobs, better pay, fewer hours
Poverty often starts with low pay and stress-related ill health affects 75% of all working people. You don't have to be unemployed to be poor nowadays. The SSP would introduce a minimum wage of £7.60 an hour, applicable to all ages, and a 35 hour working week.
This would create 24,000 new jobs in Scotland in the public sector alone.

"Labour refuses to pay public sector workers properly. Instead they sell of schools and hospitals to the profiteers and send the bill to a yet unborn generation." |
Scrap nuclear weapons
We must end the use of depleted uranium weapons, which cause cancer, birth defects and will continue to pollute areas where the UK has used them for thousands of years.
Britain's nuclear weapons system - Trident - cannot be used legally. The warheads in each missile are EIGHT times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
Tony Blair has endorsed the use of Trident as a 'loaded gun' to the heads of the world's poor, forcing them to hand over their oil resources.
The SSP would scrap Trident and retrain MoD staff to ensure that abolishing weapons of mass destruction does not mean thousands of job losses.

Make ALL Poverty History! I fully endorse the Make Poverty History campaign. Trade rules and unrelenting debt are crippling much of the developing world. I buy fairly traded products when I can and urge you all to do the same. It would be a mistake, though, to regard the kind of poverty we have in this country as acceptable. We live in a fairly wealthy country. Why is it then, that we have such high levels of child poverty? New Labour has a case to answer. The G8 Summit in July is unlikely to do anything to alter the inequalities in our world. They say talk is cheap. G8 will cost taxpayers hundreds of millions just to have it here. Only the Scottish Socialist Party seems to be asking the right questions. We are the only party anywhere near the right answers! |
