G8 GENOA REPORT
As I type this (19th July 2001), the G8 Summit in Genoa hasn't even STARTED! Already it's clear what the Security measures of the Italian Police consist of. Before any protests have taken place in earnest, "possible troublemakers" are being arrested, held without charge, then DEPORTED.
What vile brigands are being called to justice?
Convicted murderers? Football hooligans? Members of terrorist organisations?
No!
Peace protesters - anti-capitalist peace protesters - but peace protesters all the same. Their crime, it appears was to have been arrested at Faslane as part of the ongoing NON-VIOLENT campaign aimed at bringing an end to Scotland's part in Britain's nuclear hypocrisy.
Two of the people deported so far are Brian Quail and Babs McGregor from Glasgow. They are highly experienced campaigners and are TRAINED IN NON-VIOLENCE. This does not mean that they just sit passively while a ruck develops, they have experience in keeping demonstrations peaceful and constructive. Brian is joint-secretary of Scottish CND and he and Babs are both prominent members of Trident Ploughshares and are also SSP members.
John Harper (top van driver !) and Julie Quinn, also SSP members and arrestees from Faslane were also deported today [19th July].
There's one thing you can say about capitalists - they don't half stick together.
