SNP Sturgeon's Stupid Stushy Substantiates Sheridan's Salary Stance

Saturday 23rd March 2002
Scottish National Party MSP Nicola Sturgeon has indicated that she has written to the Electoral Commission to ask them to investigate Tommy Sheridan claims that he gives away nearly half of his salary after claiming that the Electoral Commission had no register of Tommy Sheridan's donations to the Scottish Socialist Party. The report in the Daily Record confirms that Tommy takes only around half of his monthly salary rather than accept the inflated salary on offer to MSP's but hints at wrong-doing in their consistently seedy tabloid way.

The Record's editor Peter Cox has a longstanding dislike of Tommy, and referred to him as a 'Tartan Trot' and an 'Armani Anarchist' for his arrest at an anti-nuclear demo at Faslane in February last year. Cox was also deeply critical of the SSP's drug policy which is founded on harm reduction rather than the far less effective and much more costly criminalisation approach. The principles of the SSP's drug policy now seem likely to be adopted by government.

Sheridan had discussed the deductions from his salary fully with the Electoral Commission. In cases where donations are less than £5,000 they do not require to be declared. The fact that Tommy regularly makes public the fact that he gives £1,100 emphasises that their has been NO COVER UP. Tommy's donations to the SSP can be viewed on the Electoral Commission's website at http://www.electoral-commission.gov.uk/index.htm

The Nats should stick to busting sleaze where it REALLY EXISTS, instead of aiming slanderous allegations at the only MSP not just fighting for a better deal for the poor, but actually standing in solidarity with them. Perhaps they should look more closely at their own ranks where some of there members actually voted in favour of the huge wage hike. Any claims that the Nats make about representing the low-waged and disenfranchised in society are surely undermined by their deeply divided stance on this issue.
